ROCKS & BOULDERS IN A WATER-COLOR LANDSCAPE
Do the rocks in your watercolor landscape look like bowling balls and popcorn? Learning to see rocks as "individuals", as well as learning to visually combine many rocks and pebbles into a single collective shape is crucial to successful landscape painting. This class will focus on the challenge of painting a desert landscape in which rocks, boulders and pebble-strewn ground are a significant feature. In addition to painting from photographs, one class will be spent sketching and photographing "en plein air" at Papago Park to gather reference material for use back in the studio. There will be demos, exercises, critique and lots of painting time.
6 classes - Monday afternoons, 1:30 to 4:30: October 6 through 20, November 3 through 17, 2008 - (no class on October 27)

The sparkling beauty of water cascading or burbling over rocks and boulders offers excitement and oh, so many challenges to the watercolorist! Reflections in calm water can be equally challenging. Water in all its many aspects is a fairly complicated subject to tackle - there is so much going on at once that this subject can be very confusing. You will learn to break down the components of this fascinating and delightful subject matter into manageable - and more easily paint-able - portions and you will practice watercolor techniques that work well for this subject. Julie will have photos for you to use or you are welcome to bring your own if you wish. There will be demos, exercises, critique and lots of painting time.

MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
My goal is to individualize instruction as much as possible. I introduce the basics to the beginning student and work with the more advanced student in gaining a more solid knowledge of those same basic techniques, along with the all-important principles and elements of design. I also attempt to assist in the search for individual artistic personality. I always try to present material in a logical, practical manner, along with a large dose of encouragement with emphasis on motivation and personal taste.
In class, beginning painters will work in a structured manner. ALL levels are encouraged to experiment and practice as much as possible in order to build confidence and experience with methods and materials. Once past the initial basic technique introduction, most class work will consist of independent projects with guidance as needed.
