“Watercolor Unleashed! MOUNTAIN STREAM” – Online Zoom Class
Dates & Times: April 20 to May 11, 2021, 1 – 4PM, 4 Tuesday afternoon classes
Medium: Watercolor
Details: Paint a mountain stream with a water cascade. Learn how to make water look wet, reflective and splashy! Painting water that looks wet requires some basic knowledge of the dynamics of how water flows and splashes. Study will focus on the “anatomy” of a waterfall, negative painting and the creative use of color. Techniques will be demonstrated to address the various puzzles with which the artist is faced when painting this stunning, fascinating and challenging subject!
There will be demos, instruction at all levels as needed, one-on-one critique and lots of painting time. Class time will be structured, yet open enough to accommodate the artistic spirit within us all. All levels are welcome and encouraged to attend. The only prerequisite is an attitude of joy in the act of painting!

“Watercolor Unleashed – Wet & Wild – ZOOM WORKSHOP”
This will be an online Zoom class. Paint from the comfort of your own studio.
Dates/Time: July 12-15, 2021, Monday-Thursday, 9AM-3:30PM.
Note: included is a Demonstration , via Zoom, by Julie Gilbert Pollard, Workshop Instructor, on Sunday afternoon, June 13, 2021, of about 75 minutes beginning about 2:00PM. The demo is a part of the SDWS monthly General Meeting, which begins at 1:30PM. Workshop participants are welcome.
Class Description: Learn how to make water look wet, reflective and splashy! With stunning waves, waterfalls or intimate woodsy creeks as your model, study water in motion and glassy reflection. Painting water that looks wet requires some basic knowledge of the dynamics of how water moves and how objects are reflected in its mirror surface. In addition to traditional watercolor methods, learn to use “acrylic underpinnings” to set the stage for vibrant colors in your “waterscape” paintings. Techniques will be demonstrated to address the various puzzles with which the artist is faced when painting this stunning, fascinating and challenging subject!
Reference photos will be supplied, or you may use your own.
Lessons will focus on:
- Cascading, splashing water
- Reflections
- Negative painting exercises for the watercolorist
- “Acrylic Underpinnings” for both watercolor and acrylic Note: the small amount of fluid acrylic necessary for this technique will be supplied.
- Color theory, simplified – “using color as value”
There will be demos, instruction at all levels, critique and lots of painting time. Class time will be structured, yet open enough to accommodate the artistic spirit within us all. All levels are welcome and encouraged to attend. The only prerequisite is an attitude of joy in the act of painting!

Details: Paint the misty, crashing, salty ocean waves and learn to apply the “anatomy” of an ocean wave to a watercolor painting. A reference photo will be provided but you are welcome to use your own if you prefer.
For this virtual online painting workshop we will use a photo and other class materials that will be sent to you by e-mail. (You are welcome and encouraged to paint from your own reference material whenever you wish.) During class time you will see demos with painting demo shown full screen through a dual camera set-up. You will have your own painting time during the class with individual critique throughout.

“Oil and Watercolor Plein Air Painting Workshop in Spain with Julie Gilbert Pollard”

Join Julie Gilbert Pollard for a wonderful week of plein air painting on the beautiful coast of Northern Spain, the Costa Brava, near Barcelona!
Let Spain seduce you! Costa Brava, where the mountains meet the sea, is the setting of this exciting painting tour in the province of Gerona. Craggy cliffs, sandy coves, pristine beaches but also medieval villages and botanical garden, all await to be painted and experienced. This region was also the home and setting for the surreal world of Salvador Dali. The magical Barcelona will also be part of this unique plein-air painting workshop in Spain.
Class Description: In this plein air workshop, you will visit inspiring locations, learning to interpret them into your personal visual expression. Expect sight-seeing, photo-sketching, sketching and “light” plein air painting using minimal equipment that is easy to carry in a medium-size backpack”.
“During the plein air sessions, I will alternate watercolor-on-paper and watercolor-as-prep-for-oil painting demos on canvas boards pre-coated with Watercolor Ground. I will demonstrate and coach you through methods and techniques that have proven invaluable in learning to distill a scene into its most simple format, leading to studio paintings that retain that illusive “plein air feel”.
All levels are welcome. Classes will be small, so Julie will have ample time to help students work toward individual goals.
