"Watercolor Unleashed! Plein Air to Studio on LAKE SUPERIOR" @ Madeline Island School of the Arts

“Watercolor Unleashed! Plein Air to Studio on LAKE SUPERIOR” – an on-location world-class workshop in plein air painting. Madeline Island School of the Arts (MISA) is ranked among the top five art and craft workshop schools in the country. The school is located on Madeline Island, Wisconsin, the largest of the 22 Apostle Islands in Lake Superior. MISA’s workshop environment is recognized for its world-renowned instructors, providing access to breathtaking Lake Superior locations, spacious studios, superior on-site accommodations, and a staff that will ensure an unforgettable experience.

Dates:  July 24 – 28, 2023, Monday-Friday, 2 days of “light” plein air field trips and 3 days in-studio.

Medium:  Watercolor

Details:  Whether painting a mountain stream or a crashing wave, learn to make water look wet and splashy as it cascades over rocks and boulders or upon a sandy beach. This watercolor workshop will focus on WAVES and WATERFALLS. Two days will be spent on field trips for “light” plein air studies: a mountain stream in Bayfield, WI, and sandstone bluffs along the Lake Superior shoreline on Madeline Island. Three days will be spent in the MISA studio.

We will be immersing ourselves into and truly experiencing the landscape through “light” plein air followed by using material gathered during the plein air excursions for more carefully thought-out paintings during studio lessons.

Complete Details:  HERE  Be sure to click on each tab to learn about MISA as well as Information and Registration Policies. This is a limited-size Workshop. All levels are welcome and encouraged to attend. The only prerequisite is an attitude of joy in the act of painting!

Accommodations:  MISA suggests workshop participants reserve a selected Lodging and Meal Plan along with Julie’s Workshop. Madeline Island has limited off-site lodging options which “sell out” many months in advance. Nearby communities may require a ferry ride each morning and evening.

Instructor:  Julie Gilbert Pollard.  Julie’s bio HERE

Tuition:  $925.00, plus travel and accommodations.

My Teaching Philosophy

My goal is to individualize instruction as much as possible. I introduce the basics to the beginning student and work with the more advanced student in gaining a more solid knowledge of those same basic techniques, along with the all-important principles and elements of design. I always try to present material in a logical, practical manner, along with a large dose of encouragement with emphasis on motivation and personal taste. In class, beginning painters will work in a structured manner and ALL levels are encouraged to experiment and practice as much as possible in order to build confidence and experience with methods and materials. Workshops generally focus on a method or subject, while weekly classes may offer basic technique or independent projects with guidance as needed and “class projects” as requested. Whatever the venue, my over-riding objective is to support and assist each person in his or her search for individual artistic personality.
